Scarborough fire claims man’s life

City of Toronto Fire Service personnel responded to the report of a basement fire minutes before 9 a.m., at 101 Robinson Ave., Scarborough. Upon arrival, the first crews saw smoke coming from the multi unit basement apartment, and heard from Toronto Police Service already on scene, that there could possibly be someone still within the unit. A second alarm was immediately called.Firefighters entered the burning basement with a combination fire attack and search operation. Within 10 minutes of our arrival the fire was knocked down and a more thorough search, unimpeded by the heavy smoke and debris resulted in the discovery of a 45 year old male victim.Due to the fire death, the Ontario Fire Marshal has been contacted and the Corners Office has been notified. At this time the fire is not considered suspicious in nature.Since no audible smoke alarm was sounding by the fire crews entering the building, Toronto Fire Services Fire Prevention Division will be investigating this issue.Toronto Fire Services would like to remind residents of Toronto to maintain working smoke alarms and ensure batteries are replaced when you change your clocks forward or back.Failure to comply with the Ontario Fire Code smoke alarm requirements could result in a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals or $100,000 for corporations.Toronto is Canada's largest city and sixth largest government, and home to a diverse population of about 2.6 million people.
