LAREDO, Texas -- State agencies, local jurisdictions and eligible nonprofit organizations in Calhoun County that suffered damage or loss as a result of Hurricane Alex and subsequent flooding now can register for federal assistance.
Public Assistance is being made available to Calhoun County after officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) reviewed damage assessments.
A briefing for Public Assistance applicants in Calhoun County will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 7. The event will be at the Calhoun County Courthouse, 211 S. Ann, Ste. 301, Port Lavaca, TX.
Today's amendment to the presidential disaster declaration of August 3 authorized all categories of Public Assistance for Calhoun County. State agencies, local jurisdictions and eligible nonprofit organizations in these counties are eligible for reimbursement for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair, restoration, reconstruction or replacement of public facilities, roads and bridges, water facilities and other infrastructure damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Alex. FEMA's Public Assistance program will reimburse a minimum of 75 percent of eligible costs.
Under the presidential declaration, Individual Assistance and all categories of Public Assistance are available in seven other counties: Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Maverick, Starr, Webb and Zapata, with Individual Assistance only available in Val Verde County. Federal funding also is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations in Cottle, Dawson, Floyd, Foard, Garza, Jim Wells, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Motley, Terry and Willacy counties on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Hurricane Alex.
