Toronto Fire Services Pipes and Drums Band wins first place award

The Toronto Fire Services Pipes and Drums Band was awarded first place in the 89th Warriors' Day Parade, held on August 21 during the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).

The results were made available this week. The band received top honours in the Honourable Lincoln Alexander Pipe Band Award category (pipes and drums with 20 or less performers).

Trophies are awarded to the participants in a number of different categories. Judging is based on, general effect and public reaction, uniformity and correctness of dress, and drill, marching deportment and discipline. Judges were located along the parade route and marks were compiled carefully to determine the winners. Musical performances of bands are not judged.

The Warriors' Day Parade Council, established in 1921, is an entirely volunteer-based organization responsible for the overall planning, promotion and execution of the Warriors' Day Parade.

The next event of the Toronto Fire Services Pipes and Drums Band will be the annual National Line of Duty Death Fire Fighter Memorial at 11 a.m. this Sunday at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The Toronto Fire Services Pipes and Drums were established in 1998. The band was conceived by firefighter Andrew Cunningham as a traditional means of representing the department. The band comprises mostly of Toronto firefighters from all divisions who proudly wear the Toronto Fire Services tartan. The band attends department funerals, recruit graduations, promotional presentations, award and merit ceremonies and any other fire fighting related function. The band also participates in parades and community events within and outside Toronto.
